Homemade Healthy Crisps and Dip?!

It is coming up to party season and there is nothing more tempting than a buffet table! 🙈Filled with all sorts of treats and nibbles calling for you to just ‘have one.’ So hard to resist I know, but how about we come up with some healthier alternatives?

Crisps and dip are probably my favourite nibble when meeting up with friends or at a party. But depending on what you have, they can be full of fat and super calorific, especially as they are so easy to eat without realising. Before you know it you have consumed a family sized bag of crisps and a tub of creamy dip! Error!

One Sunday, I decided to try and test some recipes which you can use this Christmas season. Nothing too difficult, and your friends wont even realise they are eating a healthy version!

Homemade Tortilla Crisps

Most tortilla crisps which you buy from the supermarket have been deep fried in tons of oil, by making your own you can control the amount of calories going into them.

Pre heat oven to 200 degrees. Spray each tortilla with low calorie cooking spray, then cut into bitesize triangles. At this point you can season them with whatever you like, why not try a little bit of cinnamon for a sweeter treat, some paprika always goes down well; or you could stick to simply adding some sea salt. Arrange and spread out over a baking tray, making sure they aren’t touching. Bake for about 4 minutes, flip over for another 4minutes but keep an eye on them to stop from burning. When you take them out don’t worry if still a bit flexible on the inside, they will crisp up whilst cooling!

Vegetable Crudités
A great way of getting in your 5 a day! Just simply chop up some carrots, cucumber, pepper and celery into sticks and serve.

Homemade Vegetable Crisps

Using a food processor or a mandolin (watch your fingers!), slice a mixture of root veg such as parsnips, sweet potato, beetroot etc very finely. Dab off any excess moisture with kitchen roll. Lay out on a baking tray and spray with low cal cooking spray. Season with whatever you like and then bake for about 8-10minutes in a pre heated oven at 180 degrees, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. (Keep an eye out as they may take more or less time!) If you have an air fryer than these would also work perfectly in there.

DIY Dips

Chunky Tomato Salsa
6 ripe tomatos
half a chilli
bunch of fresh coriander
half a red onion
1tsp olive oil
salt and pepper
1 tsp ready chopped garlic
1 lime

Finely chop the tomatoes, onion, red chilli and coriander and add to a bowl. Add the olive oil, garlic and juice of one lime. Combine and then season with salt and pepper.

Sundried Tomato Hummus
400g tin of chickpeas (drained and rinsed)
30g sundried tomatos (make sure to get the ones in a packet rather than in a jar of oil!!)
2 tbsp olive oil
1 lemon
1 tbsp tahini
1 tbsp ready chopped garlic
salt and pepper

In a food processor combine all the ingredients and blitz until smooth! Have a try and then season to taste! You could top with some extra sundried tomatoes, or a sprinkle of smoked paprika.

Reduced fat Guacamole
Avocado is good for you. Avocado is full of fat. Both are true. Avocados are a fatty food item but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t eat them! By adding one sneaky ingredient into this recipe you are almost halving the fat content, whilst in my opinion creating a nicer texture!

2 avocados
200g Fromage Frais or non fat Greek yoghurt
juice of half a lime
1 tsp ready chopped garlic
1/4 quarter red onion
1 tomato
bunch of coriander

Scoop out the flesh from the avocado and either in a food processor or a mixing bowl, combine with the fromage frais. Add the lime juice and garlic, and mix well. Finely chop the red onion and tomato and then add to the mixture. Chop some coriander (and you could add some jalapeños at this point too) and stir through.

All of the dips will keep for up to 3 days if kept in an airtight container in the fridge.

 So if you are having a party, or have been asked to provide some nibbles, rather than buying the remade stuff from the supermarket, try having a go at these quick and easy alternatives! Promise you will love them!
